A fun day out for all the family

We returned to the Bira motor racing circuit near Pattaya for what was promised to be a fun day’s racing for all the family with various events for all ages and interests.

Rather processional single seatersOn arriving mid morning on a sunny dry Sunday, we met our friends at their usual haunt near the final corner that lead onto the start/finish straight and found one of the single seater races already in progress.

After watching the conclusion of this we then turned to look behinMidget Bikes for not so midget kidsd us to the adjacent go-kart track.

But today it was not karts that were running here but instead young Thai kids on midget bikes all having a great time emulating their peers.

Returning to the main track we then saw a closely contested saloon car event (see lead phoUnder the hood - not a lottograph) the highlight of which was the competitor last on the starting grid rapidly carving his way through the entire field.

At the end of this the competitors had a lunch break and the pits area was opened to the public enabling us to gain a close up view of some of the competing machinery.

And during this interval a series of timed motor cycle sprintMotor Bike Sprints events took place down the main straight with riders lining up in pairs to tackle the short course which consisted of a sprint up to the end of the main straight, a ‘U’ turn and a sprint back again the overall winner being decided on the clock.Aided by a touch of glamour

To add glamour to this, whilst waiting for the green start light the pairs of competitors were shaded from the sun by a pair of scantily clad young ladies. But this distraction did not prevent a series of rapid starts if not always so rapid finishes.

The kids on their midget bikes then got the chance Midgets get a goto try this sprint event albeit on a shortened course and again in spite of the odd mishap, they put in an impressive display of speed and bike control – obviously motor cycle taxi drivers in the making.

Returning to our usual vantage point we then saw the afternoon events commence with the main single seater event which was rather spoilt by a large number of engine failures and finally a well filled VW car race which provided some quite spectacular close if not terribly fast racing.

A gaggle of beetlesAs the meeting had promised a fun day out with something for all tastes.
