May 2003

Weather - Hot and humid but mostly dry although with several heavy downpours

The comparatively quiet end to April continued for most of May, somewhat enhanced by the knee injury I had picked up during a Hash run the previous month. This continued to trouble me for some time resulting in my ceasing to attend both the Hash and the keep fit classes for a number of weeks.

I did in fact return for the Hash 1000th run weekend which was series of runs plus major parties in celebration of the Pattaya Hash having reached it’s 1000th weekly run after nearly 20 years in operation.

The whole weekend was based around the ‘Diana’ driving range in North Pattaya who kindly donated their grounds for it. I managed to walk all 3 runs in 3 days, one of which was spectacularly long, and also took part in much partying at the end, all of which made me much to busy and too tired (and inebriated?) to take any photos of this event.

This was in fact to prove to be nearly my swan song to the Hash for shortly afterwards I concluded that (a) it was too hard on my knees and (b) the novelty of  running through the jungle getting covered inMaew cuts her cake muddy water and then sitting on a block of ice whilst beer is poured over one, after a while begins to wear off.

One of the only two social events that I attended in May was a birthday party for Maew, the girlfriend of Malcolm, my friend and financial adviser. This was held at ‘Jack’s Bar’ in North Pattaya who laid on a ‘pig roast’ for the evening.

A good crowd, excellent food and drink plus Malcolm and Maew in fine form made this a most enjoyable event.

The other event was another concert at the Jomtien Boathouse by Rick and Harpic plus friends.

This was again an excellent showcase of much of the musical talent on show in Pattaya, but unfortunately the organisers chose to hold it on the same night as the English FA Cup final which due to the time difference was televised live here Groupies in actionaround 8 PM local time.

This meant that the audience was rather meagre until the game ended at which point several of the regular Pattaya ‘groupies’ arrived, mVictoria belts it outost already in a merry state.

With such an array of talent on display, it would be almost impossible to pick out the star attraction, Rick and Harpic were as usual in fine form as was Pop’s Pattaya All Stars which provided the accompaniment for most of the acts as well as performing in their own right, but definitely one voice that stood out was that of Victoria, who really belted out some scintillating numbers.

And that was just about all that was newsworthy in May.
